Smallholder training courses

Our smallholder courses make the perfect gift for someone who has a yearning for the good life. If you want to treat a special someone let us know and we can send them a card and a voucher to tell them about the treat ahead. For the keen cider drinker who wants to be a cider maker, how about our Apple and Cider day? Or the sheep keeper who wonders if cows might be the next move, our Cattle for Beginners day would be the thing. Our Introduction to Smallholding weekends are often given as gifts (and the present giver frequently joins the present receiver – perfect!). Our Introduction to Sheep, Pigs & Cattle weekend gives an introduction to four-legged livestock and is a fun and educational insight for those wondering if they can cope with something beyond a couple of hens. Our two day intensive Sheep for Beginners might be what you’re looking for, or our two day Fun on the Farm weekend is exactly that – lots of hands on stuff, including making pizza dough and poultry huts, handling lambs, feeding the pigs, collecting eggs and mucking out the ducks. Our Build Your Own Cob Oven day is a great way of gaining the skills that can result in creating your own permanent feature at home, and provide a beautiful alternative to the barbecue. We can also create a bespoke day or days of training especially for you, making your gift extra special.

Smallholding books

Debbie’s books Keeping Ducks and Geese – A Practical Guide (October 2021) and Keeping Goats – A Practical Guide (2022) are both published by The Crowood Press. You can buy the books direct from us, or from The Crowood Press, bookshops and the usual online retailers. Her latest book The Complete Guide to Smallholding will be published in Spring 2023. We also have many recommendations for books on smallholding, livestock keeping, orchards, breadmaking and other related topics; one of our suggestions is bound to make a perfect gift.

Meat boxes

Our beef, lamb, hogget, mutton, pork, gammon and bacon boxes are also given as gifts from and to those who have a love of traditional breeds and fabulous meat. We will send a card and voucher to let the person receiving the gift know what treat they have in store and to arrange preferred cuts, delivery dates etc. Meat is available in season so the card will arrive in time for their special occasion, although there may be a bit of a wait for the meat – the best things in life, of course, being worth waiting for.
